Digital Audio Lab
 
The Digital Audio Lab consists of 14 individual Macintosh workstations running the latest versions of Mac OS and Pro Tools. There is also a full-featured recording studio with professional grade microphones, monitors and a sound effects library, students can produce anything from radio commercials to multi-track musical soundtracks for video production. 
 

Electronic Field Production (EFP-Betacam SP)
 
Electronic Field Production (EFP) facilities include three cameras combining zoom and wide angle lens capabilities, two camcorders, two Betacam SP dockable recorders, and a variety of batteries, fast chargers, tripods and monitors. EFP audio capabilities include two wireless VHS systems, one wireless UHF system, an audio mixer, and various microphones. EFP lighting equipment includes a variety of lights, gel frames, and stands. EFP facilities are used to produce documentary, sports, and public affairs programming. 
 

Mobile Uplink/Production Facilities
 
The Broadcasting Service operates a full-service 8' x 32' uplink/production truck that features dual KU band uplink, dual satellite receivers, DSS satellite receivers, multi-camera production capabilities, switcher, ADM stereo audio, 20K Dubner character generator, 2-Frame synchronizers, two Betacam tape machines, one 3/4" SP tape machine, one SVHS tape machine, intercom, two-way radios, cellular phone lines, sophisticated telephone switching system, and more. The uplink truck travels across the midwest and beyond, giving students an unparalleled hands-on learning experience. Clients have included ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, C-SPAN, ESPN, FEMA, FOX, Global, IIS, PBS, and the Sports Channel.  
 

Radio Master Control
 
Radio Master Control operates both WSIU -FM Carbondale and WUSI -FM Olney using the digital computer automation system AXS from Scott Studios. The system consists of several networked computer terminals throughout the FM Studios. One main computer in FM Master Control is used by board operators to run or automate programming for the station; other computers are used for station monitoring and operation functions. Three 100 disc CD changers automate CD music. Another computer terminal is used for station production. Two computers, called Digital Longform Recorders (DLRs), digitally record longer programs from the satellite. Two other terminals are used for FM News production. Other audio equipment includes an Audiotronics mixing board, two digital audio tape (DAT) players, two reel-to-reel tape recorders, three cart machines, two CD players, two turntables, a cassette tape machine, and various microphones.  
 

Radio Newsroom
 
The Radio Newsroom features four Mac G3 workstations equipped with digital editing. Field sound is recorded on a variety of equipment, ranging from Mini-Disk recorders to stereo cassette recorders and Marantz PMD222s. The main production room has ISDN capability. The newsroom subscribes to AP, the Illinois Radio Network, and the Illinois Public Radio Network. WSIU/WUSI-FM contributes stories to all three news services as well as to National Public Radio on a limited basis. The newsroom creates 13 local newscasts daily and on Saturday mornings. News production includes spot news and in-depth reporting, from live coverage to documentaries. The WSIU/WUSI-FM news production facilities support the largest radio news staff in the region, and recipients of numerous awards for radio news and documentaries.  
 
 

Television Newsroom
 
The Television Newsroom facilities include 15 computer workstations in the main newsroom, two workstations in the studio area, five sets of SVHS field production equipment, one set of DVCPro field equipment, and seven editing/playback systems. Two of the workstations have graphics capabilities. Recently, the WSIU/WUSI-TV Newsroom was selected to Beta-test teleprompting/scriptwriting software developed by the ComPrompter Company. The TV Newsroom will be using the new system on all 15 main workstations. The approximately 500 square -foot TV Newsroom, supports a team of 65 paid and volunteer staff. The award-winning, student-produced "River Region Evening Edition" is the region's only 5:30 p.m. nightly newscast. The TV Newsroom staff also provides extensive, regional electoral coverage.  
 
 

Television Studio A
 
This 32' x 50' television production studio features a modern lighting system installed in 1998 with dimmers controlled by a two-scene, pre-set console, including a remote focus unit, and a full lighting complement. The lighting grid is approximately 15.5 feet above floor level. The studio walls are lined with 120 feet of black curtains and 120 feet of hanging-sync off-white curtains. Studio A production equipment includes four NEC SP30 cameras and one Genie lift. WSIU/WUSI-TV local studio productions are split between Studios A and B as needs dictate, averaging an estimated 600 hours of actual broadcast production annually. Several WSIU/WUSI-TV productions have won regional and national awards. In addition to broadcast production, the WSIU/WUSI studios together average 18 hours of undergraduate and graduate classroom instruction each week.  
 

Television Studio B
 
Our largest studio is 45' x 50'. It features a lighting system similar to that in Studio A, installed in 1999, and shares the NEC SP30 cameras and Genie lift with Studio A. The studio walls are lined with 80 feet of black curtains and 80 feet of hanging-sync off-white curtains. In addition to varied broadcast productions and classroom instruction, Studio B is the home of the award-winning "River Region Evening Edition" nightly newscast.  
 

TV Master Control
 
TV Master Control operates both WSIU -TV Carbondale and WUSI-TV Olney, and is staffed by SIUC students. MC student staff operate and monitor the transmission signals of two television stations, switch to live studio productions, air a variety of programming on tape format, switch to live feeds from national satellite systems, capture satellite feeds to tape for air at a later time, edit local promotional breaks, capture and route teleconferences for campus use, and much more. Digital conversion is in progress. Equipment in Master Control includes various switchers, routers, satellite receivers, remote control for the transmitters, a character generator, a DEKO 500 unit, production monitors, and network servers. The Master Control facility is connected to the transmitters in Tamaroa and Dundas, Studios A and B, TV post production, the Broadcasting Service satellite uplink and production trucks, and the SIUC Student Center.  
 

TV Post Production
 
The post-production area includes an online editing suite and a Media 100 Non-Linear Editing system w/CG real time effects, non-real time DVE Affect Effects, Photoshop, Electric Image, Illustrator, and Form Z. The online Editing Suite includes an Axial 3000 On-Line Editor, video switcher, analog/digital audio board, Dubner 30-K Character Generator, Pinnacle Deko 500 Character Generator, Ampex Still Store, three Beta SP machines, one 3/4" SP Machine, one 1-inch machine, a digital audio cart machine, and related equipment. Last year, these facilities supported approximately 2,500 hours of video post production.
