“This is Our Classroom"

What good are theories and concepts if you have not opportunity to apply them? From the start of the program in 1957, the Department of Radio-Television at SIUC has made a commitment to providing professional-quality hands-on opportunities to students.

No school in the country offers more hands on broadcast opportunities than SIUC. The partnership between Radio-Television and the Broadcasting Service (WSIU-TV and WSIU-FM) is a key to that success.   Students hold major creative and technical positions in over a dozen programs plus work in many areas of station management.  Many of these are paid positions.

When Can Students Get Involved?

Students are encouraged to get involved their first semester. Departmental classes also are available in the Freshman year.

WSIU-TV (PBS)

• WSIU-TV is NOT a cable channel.  It is broadcast station that reaches a three state region! Students are actively involved in most aspects of the station. Many classes are taught directly in the broadcast facilities.

• Students have a chance to work on many award winning shows including a nightly student produced newscast, sports shows, a game show, four different national award winning entertainment programs, not to mention division I basketball.

Two Radio Stations

WSIU-FM reaches a three-state region.  Students gain experience in news, sports, radio production and multiple areas of broadcast management.

WIDB is a totally student run radio station, from management to on-air talent.

Other Professional Opportunities

Digidawgs Records is SIUC’s own recording label.

• Student RT Productions is a contract production unit where student work with along side faculty and staff on real client productions.

Jobs

• SIUC offers over 200 paid positions in media production and management. Many of the local stations hire SIU students.

Three Internship Programs

• What experience students can’t get at SIUC could be available through one of three quality internship programs.

Bottom Line

• Nobody beats SIUC for an education that allows students to build a professional quality portfolio and at a great cost!
