Welcome to the SIUC Department of Radio and Television

Students in the Department of Radio-Television combine the analytical with hands-on practice to become cutting edge media producers and scholars. Our world-class production and research faculty guide students not only in the use of the latest technologies, but also in developing an understanding of the social, political and economic contexts of the media they produce and analyze. Students can concentrate in several areas of study: Electronic Journalism; Media Industries; Video Production; Audio Arts; 3D Computer Animation; and Media Studies.

Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Novotny Lawrence’s work extends outside the classroom to his research agenda. His book, Black Exploitation Films of the 1970s: Blackness and Genre, was published by Routledge Press in 2007. Dr. Lawrence continues to seek alternative ways to examine blaxploitation cinema. For example, he recently had a book chapter titled “All the Players Came, but Some of them Weren’t Welcome: Gay and Lesbian Representation in Blaxploitation Cinema,” accepted into a multivolume work focusing on gays and lesbians in popular culture. This is an original exploration of an area that is receiving a growing amount scholarly attention.

Student Spotlight

Johnny Dean, Jr. selected Radio-TV as a major to fulfill his dream of becoming a famous music producer. However, after taking Understanding Radio and Television with Dr. Novotny Lawrence during the fall 2007 semester, Johnny’s perspective changed. Significantly, after learning about the history of media and the role that it plays in people’s everyday lives, Johnny became engaged in social media activism.
